There is a reason the butterfly appears in Chinese paper cutting more than any other creature.Fifteen centuries ago, artisans discovered that a single red sheet could hold a soul. The butterfly became their favorite subject because it means what words cannot: two lovers who could not be together in life, and became butterflies so they would never part again. To this day, when a Chinese couple marries, butterflies still fill the windows of newlyweds.
Grandma Li, our master paper-cutter, has cut butterflies for over forty years. Ask her why, and she says: "A butterfly looks simple. But every wing vein must connect, or the wing dies. It is the easiest shape to draw, and the hardest to cut."
Her butterflies are cut from one continuous sheet — look closely and you will not find a single join. Hold it to the light and the paper breathes. This is the difference between a decoration and an heirloom: one was made by a machine in seconds, the other by a person who risked six hours of work on every cut.

Each framed butterfly ships ready to hang and ready to give — for a wedding, a first anniversary (the traditional paper anniversary), a new home, or your own wall.
