About Us
Where a Photograph Becomes an Heirloom
In a world of everything, made for everyone, we make one thing — for one person.
Mrehloy is a small studio where Chinese master artisans turn the photographs you love most into hand-cut portraits, wood-burned keepsakes, and art rebuilt from real flowers. Each piece exists only because you asked for it. Nothing here is in stock. Nothing here will ever be in stock.
Part One — The Cut: Paper-Cut Portraits
Fifteen centuries ago, Chinese artisans discovered that a single sheet of red paper could hold more than decoration — it could hold a person. A likeness. A blessing. Newlyweds, grandparents, and newborns had their faces cut into paper and pasted to windows, so the family was always watching over the home.
That craft is dying. There are fewer master paper-cutters alive today than there are pandas. Each of our artisans trained for decades: how to cut a face in one unbroken line, how one wrong breath ruins six hours of work and the sheet begins again.
Today, we make that same art for you — not for windows, but for your walls. Send us a photograph of anyone: your grandmother, the love of your life, a child, a friend who is no longer here. We hand-cut their likeness in crimson xuan paper, mounted in a hardwood frame. Before any blade touches paper, you receive a digital preview of your finished piece within 48 hours. Nothing is cut until you say yes.
There is one gift this art was always meant for: the first wedding anniversary is traditionally the paper anniversary — and there is no paper gift more personal than a portrait cut from a single sheet.
Meet the hands behind it:
"A machine can copy a face, but it cannot feel who that person was. I cut every portrait the way I remember my family — because every photograph someone sends me is someone's whole world."
— Grandma Li, Master Paper-Cutter
Part Two — The Flame: Pyrography Keepsakes
There is an old belief that fire remembers what it touches. Our pyrographers write with that memory.
A wedding date burned beneath two entwined trees. A dog who crossed the rainbow bridge, forever young on a linden board. A portrait burned line by line into wood, where every stroke is permanent the moment it is made — no eraser, no undo, no second sheet. That is the whole point.
Pyrography suits the moments you never want to fade: weddings, memorials, pets, anniversaries. Wood holds warmth the way paper holds a face. And by tradition, the fifth wedding anniversary is the wood anniversary — burn your wedding portrait or family name into linden wood, a keepsake as permanent as the marriage it celebrates.
When your piece arrives, sealed with our studio chop, you will understand why our customers call these the gifts that make people cry.
"Fire doesn't wait for you to decide. Every line I burn is a promise — permanent from the first touch. When I burn a portrait, I burn it knowing it will outlive me."
— Grandpa Wang, Master Pyrographer
Part Three — The Garden: Our Smaller Crafts
Beyond portraits, our studio keeps two more old crafts alive — each small, each made entirely by hand.
Silk velvet flowers. A craft once reserved for Chinese royalty: thin silk stretched over wire, petal by petal, until a blossom forms that never wilts. We make them as pendants and earrings — the flower you can wear.
Dried-flower art. Van Gogh's sunflowers, rebuilt from real dried botanicals, petal by petal, in a frame. A painting you can almost smell.
What "Handmade" Actually Means Here
-
Your piece is cut, burned, or built by one master — start to finish. Not a production line.
-
You approve a digital preview of your finished piece within 48 hours before anything is made.
-
Every work is sealed with our studio chop and signed by its maker.
-
We accept only 20 custom portrait commissions each month. That's not a marketing number — that's how many our masters can make well.
A Note From Our Founder
"When I held the first commissioned portrait we ever made — a woman's mother, cut from one sheet of red paper — I understood what we were really selling. Not art. A way to hold on. If a photograph is your memory, an heirloom is your memory made permanent. That's worth slowing down for."
